Our Journey Toward the Gold Standard in Permanent Laser Hair Removal

Skin Clinic Dermonde was founded in 2005 in Zurich, at a time when IPL was considered the most advanced technology available. Alexandrite and Nd:YAG laser systems did exist, but they were incredibly slow, extremely expensive, and far from refined. Treating larger areas such as legs or the back could take hours. In that era, IPL was the faster, more affordable, and therefore more practical solution.

The Rise of Diode Lasers – A First Step Forward

Around 2010, diode lasers began entering the market. They offered safer, faster, more comfortable, and more effective treatments compared to IPL. In 2011, we purchased our first diode laser. From that point on, the industry saw rapid developments—newer, faster, seemingly more stable models appeared every year. We continued expanding our equipment with the latest systems, always seeking the best available technology.
Results across different diode laser manufacturers varied noticeably. Some brands delivered stable, high-performing devices; others lost power quickly. Overall, diode laser results were decent—good, even. But a consistent issue remained: hair often became finer and lighter, yet did not fully disappear. It became clear to us that the industry needed a true breakthrough.

The Alexandrite Era – A Better, But Imperfect Solution

In 2017, we invested in our first Alexandrite laser. It featured a standard handpiece with a circular spot, which presented its own challenges. Overlapping pulses on the same area could cause burns, forcing treatments to be slower and energy settings to be reduced for safety.
Still, the improvement in results compared to diode lasers was unmistakable. For the first time, we were able to permanently remove much finer and lighter hairs—achieving outcomes that diode lasers simply couldn’t deliver. Yet the workflow was still time-consuming and carried unnecessary risks. Something better had to exist.

2018 – The Breakthrough That Changed Everything

In 2018, the Italian manufacturer Quanta System introduced a truly revolutionary device: the Thunder MT.
This system remains, to this day, the most powerful technology in permanent laser hair removal. It combines two laser sources—755 nm Alexandrite and 1064 nm Nd:YAG—and, uniquely, allows these wavelengths to be blended in every single pulse. MT stands for Mixed Technology, a patented innovation exclusive to Quanta System.

Equipped with the world’s only scanner handpiece of its kind, the Thunder MT delivers 36 perfectly aligned square pulses over a 9 × 9 cm area—up to 15 shots per second.
Despite the exceptionally high purchase price and substantial maintenance costs, we knew instantly that this was the future of hair removal. We invested in our first Thunder MT that same year. And the results proved us right.
Since then, we have added at least one new Thunder MT system to our fleet every year. With a purchase price of CHF 110,000 per device and annual maintenance costs of CHF 6,000, it is the most expensive hair removal laser system in the world—but the performance it delivers is unmatched.

Why Thunder MT Remains the Gold Standard

Absolute precision, advanced safety, and the ability to combine Alexandrite for lighter skin tones and Nd:YAG for darker or tanned skin—without any risk of pulse overlap—make this system the most powerful and effective laser available today.
No technological advancement currently on the horizon seems capable of surpassing it. But should a future innovation outperform the Thunder MT, we will be the first to adopt it. Excellence is not a luxury for us—it is our standard.

Expanding Expertise – Me Esthetic Joins the Dermonde Family

In 2022, we acquired Me Esthetic, a renowned beauty salon in Innsbruck. With this acquisition, we expanded not only our geographic reach but also our expertise in additional aesthetic treatment methods.
Because Skin Clinic Dermonde enjoys an established reputation in Zurich, our two Zurich clinics continue to operate under this name. Our locations in Bern, Kreuzlingen, and Innsbruck carry the Me Esthetic brand.
Regardless of the name on the door, every Dermonde Group clinic shares one common foundation:
all are equipped exclusively with the Thunder MT system by Quanta System.
